Spin Expo New York

A few weeks back, I attended Spin Expo for work and just wanted to share a few of the photos I took. The Spin Expo trade show is kind of like a TNNA for the factory world, but certainly not as fun. (Although there was a lady with big hair getting her picture taken with her dog. Her dog’s hair was styled like hers.)

The show is divided up into 2 sections: trend and the main show floor with all of the different yarn mills showing their goods. The trend area was particularly inspiring this year and was put together by Sophie Stellar.

I browsed the main floor very quickly. Typically the yarns shown are a little beyond my line’s price point, so I just glance around to see if anything new is in the air. What I did notice was a lot of the displays were hand knitting themed. They had their sample yarns wound up into little balls or skeins complete with knitting needles nearby. Typically the yarns are displayed in cones since their final use is for the machine. The trend table below featured colorful mittens and socks. Even though they can be knitted on a machine, sweaters are usually the focus, not accessories.

I would say the main trends were colorful stripes and fair isle, cables, ruffles, and sparkle. Yes, lots of sparkly metallic yarn! Including this dress which was knit entirely in metallic yarn. This picture doesn’t do the yarn justice at all! It sparkled like no body’s business.

Even though it wasn’t quite as fun as TNNA, it was inspiring none the less. Another plus – it was less tempting to want to bring the yarn home. Machine yarn = super, super thin!
